The Planning Department

The Planning Department of the City of St. Thomas provides support to City Council, and its committees, on all matters related to land use planning, and in particular those matters under the auspices of the Ontario Planning Act.

The Planning Department prepares policy and processes to ensure that the City can guide growth and community development in the direction the community desires. Through an agreement, the Planning Department also provides planning services to the Municipality of Central Elgin. These municipalities together comprise the Central Elgin Planning Area.

The Planning Department reviews and processes development approval applications from a community planning and urban design perspective. The Department works with its clients to anticipate and identify current and future community needs, and to ensure that the quality of life in our community is improved over time.
