HERITAGE PROPERTIES

First settled in 1810, much of the history of St. Thomas is reflected in its architecture.  From churches and homes through to the city's railway history, the city has protected our historic properties

Municipal Heritage Registry

Designated Properties
Heritage Designation:
a) recognizes the importance of a property to the local community
b) protects the property's cultural heritage value
c) encourages good stewardship and conservation
d) promotes knowledge and understanding about the property

Steps to Designation:
1) identifying the property as a candidate for designation
2) researching and evaluating the property
3) serving Notice of Intention to Designate, with an opportunity for objection
4) passing and registering the designation by-law
5) listing the property on the municipal register
6) listing the property on the provincial register

Listed Properties - Talbot Street Properties, Stanley Street to Elgin Street

Listed Properties - Talbot Street Properties, Elgin Street to St. Catharine Street

These listed properties have cultural heritage value and have not been designated.  Owners of listed properties must give Council at least 60 days notice of their intention to demolish or remove a building of structure on the property.  This allows staff and the Municipal Heritage Committee time to evaluate the property and advise Council on the cultural heritage value of the property.  There are no obligations/restrictions on alterations to the property.

The City's Contractor is continuing construction on the Moore Street and L&PS Train Station/Rail Corridor capital projects. The balance of construction work on Talbot Street, after the road closure for the placement of the first lift of base course asphalt on Tuesday, May 21, 2013, involves the installation of curb/gutter, sidewalk, paving stones, second lift of base course asphalt, surface course pavement layer, and other miscellaneous surface works.
